The Galveston Historical Foundation traces its roots to 1871, making it one of the oldest preservation organizations in the United States. Originally established to document and protect the island's rapidly disappearing historic resources, the organization has evolved into a nationally recognized leader in preservation.
Formally incorporated in 1954, the Foundation has been instrumental in saving countless historic structures from demolition, including many of the buildings that now comprise The Strand National Historic Landmark District. Our work has helped transform Galveston into a premier destination for heritage tourism.
Today, we continue this legacy through innovative preservation programs, educational initiatives, and the management of historic properties that tell the story of Galveston's remarkable past.
